The Supreme Court ruled 8-1 that government officials can be personally liable for violating religious freedom. The lone dissenting vote was Chief Justice John Roberts. The Alliance Defending Freedom applauded the ruling. “When government officials engage in misconduct without consequences, it leaves victims without recourse, undermines the nation’s commitment to protecting constitutional rights, and emboldens the government to engage in future violations,” said Kristen Waggoner, general counsel for ADF.
