‘NUKING’ THE FILIBUSTER FAILS

The push by Senate Democrats to transform the filibuster in order to pass two election bills failed in a 52-48 vote. Democratic senators Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin joined all 50 Republicans in voting down the measure.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-NY, said: “Even if you think the filibuster is a good thing, isn’t protecting voting rights, and preventing their diminution more important?”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said it was good to keep the filibuster’s 60-vote majority. “It makes the Senate serve its founding purpose: forging compromise, cooling passions, and ensuring that new laws earn broad support from a cross-section of our country,” he said.
