STUCK UNDER THE FOOD PYRAMID
We’ve all seen the classic food pyramid: A large section of carbohydrates on the bottom, a smaller section of fruits and vegetables above, an even smaller segment of dairy, meats, and fish, and finally a smallest cut on top for fats and sweets.
It was born out of a 1977 Senate committee report titled “Dietary Goals,” and scientists who questioned these guidelines were pushed aside. Further, the new diet was significantly different than the eating habits of many groups of healthy people.
And, upon adopting the more “modern” diet, many of those healthy people experienced the health issues that notoriously plague our society today, such as obesity, diabetes, and cancer. Here’s why we need to get out from under the food pyramid and question when we’re told “the science is settled.”
