Sheriff Candidates speak to LGBTI
Last night the top two of candidates vying for the office of Bexar County Sheriff, Susan Pamerleau and Javier Salazar, were guest speakers at the membership meeting of San Antonio’s LGBT LULAC Council, Orgullo de San Antonio.
What did they discuss?
Salazar stated he will recruit from LGBT community to represent the community at large. The proportions would be to represent the populations of blacks, Hispanics, Anglos (and women) in Bexar County.
Pamerleau was clearly uncomfortable with the subject, and was careful to be politically correct in calling out all the letters, L G B T Q I. She mentioned diversity and how she sought help in being sensitive in the way she addresses and interviews and questions transgenders, etc. She also somewhat suggested that the jail population would be separated by sexuality. Pamerleau stated that Texas needs an amendment to the state law on how illegal immigrants are to be charged when committing a misdemeanor or felony (assault, child abuse, etc) to add one more offense in order to make it a more serious crime.
Salazar attacked Pamerleau’s integrity by claiming that she “forced her deputies to work long hour without a bathroom break thereby causing some women to get urinary tract infections. Then she accused him of not being informed and that he should get his facts straight. (One event he referred to occurred before she took office, she said.)
This heated up the room. The LGBTI group began to clearly gang up on Pamerleau. Almost everyone in the room was wearing matching navy blue,”Salazar” imprinted t-shirts.
The MC stated more than once, that “we are to show due respect for both candidates.”
