Texas Attorney General Joins Lawsuit to Stop San Antonio’s Taxpayer-Funded Abortion Travel
SAFA Applauds Ken Paxton’s Legal Action to Protect Life and Uphold the Law
The San Antonio Family Association (SAFA) is celebrating a major development in the fight to protect both life and taxpayer integrity. On April 4, 2025, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced that his office has filed a lawsuit against the City of San Antonio following the City Council’s narrow 6-5 vote on April 3 to fund abortion travel through its controversial “Reproductive Justice Fund.”
“Under Texas law, cities have no authority to use public money to assist people in circumventing Texas’s pro-life protections,” said Attorney General Paxton in his official press release. “Because the appropriation violates the Texas Constitution’s Gift Clause and represents an ultra vires action, my office has requested a temporary restraining order and injunctive relief to stop the unlawful fund from going into effect. Beyond being an egregious misuse of public funds, it’s an attack on the pro-life values of our state.”
SAFA President Mike Knuffke stated, “After yesterday’s Council vote, a small pro-abortion crowd celebrated Mayor Ron Nirenberg’s tie-breaking vote to use taxpayer money—not their own—to contract with organizations like Jane’s Due Process and Planned Parenthood to ferry young pregnant women out of state for what they call ‘care,’ but is, in truth, the murder of the unborn. The taxpayers and vulnerable women of San Antonio deserve better.”
Patrick Von Dohlen, SAFA co-founder, condemned the City Council’s hypocrisy: “They claim to protect born children from abuse and preserve DNA evidence in criminal cases, yet they are willing to fund the total eradication of all potentially useful DNA evidence through abortion. The City Attorney failed to inform the Council that their vote would violate state law, instead choosing to chastise a mayoral candidate who spoke against the ordinance.”
Von Dohlen continued, “City Attorney Andy Segovia should be held accountable. His negligence has already cost the city over $480,000 to defend the creation of the Reproductive Justice Fund in the 2024 City Budget passed on September 14, 2023. That cost will now double.”
SAFA volunteer Robert Gonzalez echoed this sentiment during his testimony, comparing the City Council’s actions to those of officials judged during the Nuremberg Trials, who endorsed the concept of “life unworthy of life.”
The Texas Attorney General’s lawsuit now joins SAFA’s existing legal challenge, which is currently under review. This dual legal effort highlights the seriousness of the city’s overreach.
Every life is unique from the moment of fertilization. Elective abortion is not healthcare. It is the intentional termination of an innocent human life and a direct violation of natural and eternal law. Masked in rhetoric of compassion, abortion is, in reality, a profound act of violence against both the child and the mother. Forcing taxpayers to fund it only compounds the injustice.
This is the greatest moral crisis of our time—more deadly than slavery, and akin to the Holocaust in its dehumanization and eradication of the vulnerable. Taxpayers deserve representation that upholds the dignity of life and seeks a future of prosperity rooted in moral clarity.
San Antonio voters are encouraged to make their voices heard during the upcoming Municipal Election on Saturday, May 3. Vote for candidates who commit to defending both life and responsible governance.
