Council Consideration Request to Relocate Travis Park Confederate Monument

Let’s fix streets instead of wasting tax payer money to move the Confederate Monument in Travis Park. It would be a lot more impactful to add a plaque that states facts about the monument to help people remember history accurately and a lot more helpful to improving the quality of life for San Antonians if we used the tens of thousands of dollars to fix our streets rather than moving the monument. Councilman Trevino has a distorted view of history. If he’s so concerned about making sure “to be inclusive of all facets of the community” let’s make sure that the community includes unborn humans. In 2015, Trevino voted for the expansion of abortion facilities throughout the City of San Antonio, which is arguably another form of slavery. Trevino has a propensity to support only the “monuments” that suit his ideology and political ascendancy, not the community and not all people treated as “second-class citizens”.

There was a Monument Rally at Travis Park to preserve Texas History this past Saturday, August 12th. Hundreds stood in the summer heat to preserve the monument that has been there since 1891. A much smaller crowd, protesting the monument’s existence, was present. The Rally remained peaceful. Who knows the history of this monument? Why was it commissioned and placed in the park over 26 years after the Union won the Civil War over the Confederacy? Why would a monument like this be placed here in a post-Civil War culture? Remember history or we’re destined to repeat it.
