On Saturday evening Mamoudou Gassama, who is from Mali, was just an illegal migrant going to a football game.

But blaring horns and a distraught crowd drew his attention to a little child dangling from the fourth-floor balcony of an apartment block.

Without thinking twice he ran across the road to the building and began to haul himself up, hand over hand, from balcony to balcony, until he reached the child, with a daring and strength that seemed superhuman.
