Texas: Conference Committee to Vote on Evacuation Carry

The Texas Legislature will wrap up over Memorial Day weekend, but there’s one more piece of pro-gun legislation they need to pass.

House Bill 1177, a Texas Family Action-backed measure that protects citizens from being charged with a crime for carrying a handgun without a License To Carry while evacuating from an area during a declared state or local disaster, or while returning to that area, has been sent to a conference committee to work out the differences between the House and Senate versions of the bill. The House passed a stronger bill that protects evacuees for a longer period of time — one week versus 48 hours after a disaster declaration — and ties the protection to a disaster declaration only, rather than a mandatory evacuation order and a disaster declaration.
