City Council Approves SA’s Biggest Budget Ever
City Council approved the $2.7 billion fiscal year 2018 budget on Thursday. The 2018 budget, which takes effect on Oct. 1, is the largest in city history, largely driven by capital spending on bond projects.
For the first time, council members tackled the budget with an “equity lens.” Councilman William Shaw (District 2) commended this change, saying “Today in City Council, we passed San Antonio’s first budget to use an “equity lens” in addressing the needs of our community. This is monumental because as opposed to all districts receiving the same amount of funding, districts were given money based on need. Equity aims to understand the needs of the community and fairly distribute resources.”
The budget passed unanimously.
The city council must re-prioritize away from false and tertiary social justice issues and get back to basics of public safety and infrastructure to comply with the City’s purpose and Charter.
