City Council to vote an item that will harm young women and conceived babies

According to the City of San Antonio Council A Session Agenda for September 21, 2017, the Council will vote as part of the Consent Agenda an item (item 51) that will physically harm young women and conceived babies. Based on the current Item #51, the City will actively condone and distribute Long Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARC), specifically, intrauterine devices (IUDs), through the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District.

While many professional organizations recommend (IUD) use in adolescents, data on performance of currently available devices in US teens are scant. The city is promoting these devices but how much do they know about long term effects and risks?

An IUD is a small metal or plastic device which is embedded with a hormonal substance and is placed inside the uterus. Common side effects include cramping, spotting, heavy menstrual flow, depression, and possibly even an infection that could lead to a condition called pelvic inflammatory disease, ultimately rendering the individual infertile. There is also a risk of uterine perforation — although extremely rare — which could lead to an emergency operation.

IUDs have other health risks for both the mother and a conceived child. IUDs are also not 100% effective at preventing pregnancy, and pregnancies with an IUD in place have a much higher risk of miscarriage, and are much more likely to be ectopic.

The promotion and distribution of IUDs is contrary to logic and to the City’s handling of teen alcohol or substance use/abuse or almost any other unhealthy behavior including texting & driving. The funds need to be re-directed to address the cause of pregnancy, i.e. sex outside of marriage, to change behaviors towards chastity, sports and healthy choices. The City has no business being in drug distribution that harms people, in this case, young women and conceived babies.

The Item needs to be pulled from the Consent Agenda and an Amendment needs to be passed to stipulate that no tax payer funding will be used for contraceptives, and to re-direct the money to a comprehensive Chastity Awareness and Education Program.

It is time the we #ReclaimSA!

RE:  Council A Session Item #51

Dear            ,

I am writing to express my concern for Council A Session Item #51. This item needs to be pulled from the consent agenda and discussed fully, amended, and the funds need to be re-directed to life affirming, authentically healthy choices before approval.

Your decision goes against common sense and the wisdom of risk avoidance that is utilized when promoting no drinking, no smoking, no texting and driving, etc. Actually, your decision will put girls at risk of pubescent boys and reduce the importance and benefit of the virtue of modesty.

Before it’s too late and someone gets hurt by your bad choice, delay the implementation of your decision until you can get public input from parents and other concerned citizens. You’ve made a politically correct decision, not one based on science and reason or what’s good for the students.

Sincerely,

Concerned Citizen
