COVID AID
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has offered a $1.62 trillion COVID aid deal to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. It would provide food and housing aid, financial assistance to schools, and funding for coronavirus testing and tracing. The main sticking points? The White House wants to cap aid to state and local governments at $250 billion and keep the weekly federal unemployment bonus to $400 per week. The state and local aid is $186 billion less than the Democrats last offered but is also $100 billion more than the White House offered in the summer. “The speaker thinks there’s a possibility of getting a deal,” said House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-MD.
