History of the Fiesta Battle of Flowers
This week kicks off a special time in San Antonio — Fiesta!
Fiesta began in 1891 to honor heroes of the Alamo and the battle of San Jacinto. Women in horse drawn carriages held a parade around Alamo Plaza and threw flowers at each other. This was the very first “battle of flowers” — which would later grow into Fiesta — and it grew quickly.
With more and more events, within just a few years it was already a week long, including royalty, a carnival and more parades.
