Nirenberg asks Abbott to ease property tax revamp, address ‘vitriol’
San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg met with Gov. Greg Abbott on Monday. Nirenberg said he asked the governor to ease a proposal to rein in local officials’ authority over property tax increases and expressed his concerns about the “vitriol” generated by Abbott’s special session agenda. Nirenberg told Abbott that “one of [his] main concerns is that the level of vitriol and anti-city rhetoric that has been placed on the floor by this agenda has not been helpful.”
Is it “vitriol” only if Governor Abbott disagrees with Mayor Nirenberg? Or is it vitriolic on Ron Nirenberg’s part to shove disordered ideologies and over burdensome taxation on San Antonians?
Abbott, who fears that local officials are too expansive in the use of their power, is pushing a list of proposals to rein city governments in on several front, including local property taxes and tree-cutting regulations.
Within the principle of subsidiarity, people who are unable to obtain relief from (the abuse of) the most immediate political community authority have the right to seek help from the next higher authority. San Antonians deserve to be protected from an unbridled City Administration. While SA is a Home Rule City, the City is subject to the State of Texas which has primary authority and responsibility according to the US Constitution. Rogue City and County Governments need accountability, limits and supervision for the good of individuals and the common good.
