San Antonio’s murder rate – highest in 20 years
San Antonio’s murder rate is the highest in 20 years, and the city politicians and local media are focusing on more tax money for social programs and jobs.
What’s curious is that none of them talks about punishing bad behavior and greater protection of the innocent. They won’t preach publicly against bad behavior because they don’t want to be “judgmental”.
SA’s city manager Sheryl Sculley has been locked in a very public and nasty contract battle with the police and firefighters. This has directly caused many persons to have second thoughts about applying to the SAPD and SAFD, making an already thin public safety line even thinner.
The SA mayor and city council seem to fear the city manager because Sculley (like the mayor and city council themselves) is supported by the SA/Bexar County business Establishment and local poverty industry that gets tax money and never accomplishes anything.
Uncivilized behavior like murder, theft, and assaults cannot be excused. They must be punished and preached against. Thuggish, “gansta” must be condemned and not excused as a “cultural norm”.
Furthermore, the instruments used in criminal activity must not be blamed. Guns and knives don’t act on their own.
Do parents, churches, community groups, schools and other social institutions need to be paid to preach and encourage people to behave in a civilized manner? Do they need to become part of the “poverty industry”?
2017, SA citizens and voters must vote in a new responsive local government that is NOT controlled by the big business lobby or by the poverty industry. We need elected officials who respect the law and city charter, and that protect law abiding citizens’ rights and punish criminals.
