Supreme Court justice chooses San Antonio for very personal appearance

U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor paid a visit to UTSA on Thursday to participate in a one-hour Q&A session with students.

Sotomayor received a long, standing ovation from the capacity crowd in the auditorium.

During the Q&A session, Sotomayor answered questions regarding her personal journey, including her rise through the ranks of the judiciary system to the nation’s highest court.

Sotomayor was appointed to the bench by President Barack Obama in 2009, becoming only the third woman to hold the office. In her eight years as a member of the court, the justice has weighed in on such historic decisions as the allowing of corporations to donate unlimited funds to political campaigns, the upholding of the Affordable Care Act, and the legalization of same sex marriage.
